What should you know about adsorbed tetanus vaccine?

It may be given alone in some settings or as part of a combined vaccine that also protects against diphtheria and, in some products, pertussis.

The vaccine contains tetanus toxoid, a detoxified form of the toxin made by tetanus bacteria. It trains the immune system to recognise and neutralise the toxin without exposing you to live tetanus bacteria.

Adsorbed means the toxoid is attached to an adjuvant, commonly an aluminium salt. The adjuvant helps the immune system respond to the toxoid. The word describes how the vaccine is formulated; it does not mean the vaccine removes tetanus from an existing wound or treats established tetanus.

Tell the vaccinator about previous tetanus-containing doses, a serious allergic reaction to any vaccine ingredient, severe swelling or pain after an earlier dose, pregnancy, current illness, and medicines or conditions that affect immunity. Bring your vaccination record if available because the product and timing depend on age, earlier doses, and the reason for vaccination.

Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site can occur, along with tiredness, headache, mild fever, or stomach upset. Rest, fluids, and gentle arm movement may help. Ask a clinician or pharmacist which pain medicine is suitable for you rather than taking a new medicine automatically.

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, marked dizziness, weakness, or collapse after vaccination. These can signal a severe allergic reaction and need urgent treatment.

Contact a clinician promptly if injection-site swelling is extensive, pain is severe or worsening, fever is concerning, or symptoms do not settle as expected. For a deep, puncture, contaminated, crushed, or bite wound, clean it and seek timely medical assessment if your vaccination history is incomplete or uncertain. Wound care may involve a vaccine dose and, in some situations, tetanus immune globulin.

Ask which tetanus-containing product you are receiving, what other diseases it covers, and when your next dose is due. If the vaccine is being considered after an injury, ask how the wound type and your documented dose history affect the need for vaccination or tetanus immune globulin.
