Adsorbed diphtheria–tetanus vaccine: what to know

It contains inactivated toxins, called toxoids, attached to an adjuvant that helps the body build an immune response. The exact product and timing depend on age, previous doses, pregnancy, health history, and local vaccination guidance.

A toxoid is a bacterial toxin altered so that it cannot cause the illness but can still be recognised by the immune system. “Adsorbed” means the toxoids are attached to an aluminium-containing adjuvant. This keeps the immune stimulus at the injection site long enough to support a useful response.

This vaccine prevents diphtheria and tetanus; it does not treat an infection that is already present. Diphtheria can affect the throat and breathing, while tetanus affects nerves and muscles after bacteria enter through broken skin.

Bring any vaccination record and tell the clinician about previous serious vaccine reactions, current illness, pregnancy, immune conditions, medicines, and recent vaccinations. A mild illness may not require postponement, but the vaccinator should make that decision from your circumstances.

Afterward, soreness, redness, swelling, tiredness, headache, or a mild fever can occur. Move the arm gently, drink fluids, and ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain reliever is suitable for you. Keep the record because later doses may be needed to maintain protection.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse, confusion, or marked weakness after vaccination. These can signal a severe allergic reaction and require immediate treatment.

Contact a clinician promptly if fever is persistent, pain or swelling is severe or worsening, or another symptom concerns you. A deep, dirty, puncture, bite, or burn wound needs timely assessment because wound cleaning and tetanus protection may be required; vaccination does not replace wound care.

Ask which formulation matches your age, whether your available records show a complete course, when another dose is due, and what to do if earlier records cannot be found. If vaccination follows an injury, ask whether the wound needs additional treatment.
