Adipose mesenchymal stem cells explained

Short answer
Adipose mesenchymal stem cells are cells obtained from fat tissue, but their orthopedic use is not routine proven care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Clinics may describe injections made from a person's own fat as regenerative treatment. The name alone does not tell you which cells are present, how the tissue was processed, whether cells were expanded, or what evidence and regulatory authorization apply to that exact product and intended use.
What the terminology leaves out
Mesenchymal stromal cells can be isolated from tissues including fat. A typical procedure may involve removing a small amount of adipose tissue, processing it and delivering a resulting preparation to a target area. Preparations are not interchangeable: they may differ in cell mixture, handling, sterility controls and intended biological action.
Terms such as stem cell, stromal vascular fraction and fat-derived injection may be used loosely in advertising. A proposed ability to influence tissue healing does not establish that an injection will regrow cartilage, reverse arthritis or restore a damaged tendon.
Checks to make before considering treatment
Start with a clear diagnosis and discuss established options for your condition. Ask for the exact product name, source of the cells, processing steps, sterility testing, clinician qualifications and the legal authorization for the proposed use in the country where treatment will occur.
Request a balanced explanation of expected benefit, uncertainty, alternatives and possible harms. Be cautious if promotional language promises cartilage regrowth, uses one preparation as a cure for unrelated conditions, or discourages you from seeking an independent specialist opinion. Keep copies of consent documents and treatment details.
Problems that need medical attention
After tissue collection or injection, promptly contact the treating team for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, drainage, fever or worsening swelling because these can signal infection or another procedure-related problem.
Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling, fainting, chest pain, sudden weakness, or a cold and pale limb. New severe symptoms should be assessed on their own merits rather than attributed to a normal healing response.
Questions for the treating clinician
Ask what diagnosis the procedure targets, what outcome would count as meaningful improvement, how progress will be measured, and what happens if symptoms do not improve. Clarify who manages infection or other complications and whether later surgery could be affected by the procedure.

Questions people ask
Are adipose mesenchymal stem cells the same as a standard fat injection?
No. A fat graft, a minimally processed tissue preparation and an isolated or expanded cell product can differ in composition and purpose. Ask the clinic to identify exactly what will be collected, processed and injected.
Can these cells regrow joint cartilage?
That claim should not be assumed from the words stem cell. Whether a particular preparation helps a particular joint condition depends on the product, diagnosis and quality of supporting evidence, and it should not be presented as assured cartilage regrowth.
Does using my own cells remove the risks?
No. Collection, processing and injection can still involve infection, bleeding, tissue injury, contamination or an unwanted inflammatory response. Risk also depends on where and how the preparation is delivered.
