ADHD symptoms in children

Short answer
Children with ADHD may show persistent inattention, excessive activity, or impulsive behaviour that is greater than expected for their development and disrupts life in several settings.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key distinction
- The behaviour is persistent, developmentally unusual, and functionally disruptive
- Where signs matter
- Information from home, school, and other regular settings helps build the picture
- Support now
- Clear instructions, predictable routines, movement opportunities, and specific praise may help
The short answer
Examples include missing instructions, losing school items, leaving a seat when expected to remain there, calling out, struggling to wait, or abandoning tasks. Normal energy, boredom, or an occasional difficult day is not enough to identify ADHD.
What clinicians look for
Behaviour is compared with that of children at a similar developmental stage. A meaningful pattern lasts over time, appears in more than one place, and interferes with learning, friendships, family routines, or safe participation in activities.
The same child may focus well on a favourite game yet struggle with multi-step instructions or repetitive classwork. Hearing or vision difficulty, learning differences, language needs, anxiety, sleep problems, seizures, stress, and other health conditions can produce similar concerns, so assessment should be broad.
How parents and teachers can help
Write down what happens before, during, and after difficult moments, including the task, time of day, sleep the night before, and what helped. Compare observations from home and school without blaming the child; differences between settings often reveal which demands or supports matter.
Give one brief instruction at a time, use visual routines, warn before transitions, provide planned movement breaks, and praise a specific helpful behaviour. A clinician may gather developmental and medical history, school information, and questionnaires from adults who see the child in different situations.
When to arrange medical care
Seek a routine evaluation when the pattern persistently affects school progress, friendships, family life, self-esteem, or safety. Earlier discussion is worthwhile if a child frequently runs into danger, is being excluded from school activities, or is becoming very distressed.
Get urgent help for self-harm statements or actions, a threat of serious harm, hallucinations, severe confusion, a seizure, collapse, or a sudden striking behaviour change. Sudden symptoms following a head injury also require prompt medical attention.
Questions parents can ask
Ask how developmental level and school observations will be considered, whether hearing, vision, sleep, learning, or anxiety need evaluation, and what support can begin before assessment is complete. If treatment is proposed, discuss goals and how progress will be monitored at home and school.

Questions people ask
Can a child with ADHD concentrate on games?
Yes. Attention often varies with novelty, interest, immediate feedback, and task structure. Strong focus on a preferred activity does not settle whether a broader ADHD pattern is present.
Does lively behaviour mean a child has ADHD?
No. Activity varies among children. Assessment considers development, persistence, behaviour across settings, functional impact, and other possible explanations.
Should the school be involved in an assessment?
School input is often valuable because staff can describe learning, attention, impulse control, peer interactions, and response to classroom supports in a regular setting.
