Short answer

ADHD is a real, recognised health condition involving persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that can interfere with everyday functioning.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What an ADHD diagnosis means

Occasional distraction or restlessness happens to many people. ADHD describes a broader pattern that is persistent, begins during development, appears across relevant parts of life, and causes meaningful difficulty. Presentation varies: one person may struggle mainly with attention and organisation, while another may also show pronounced impulsivity or restlessness.

There is no single conversation, behaviour, scan, or laboratory test that establishes ADHD on its own. Assessment draws on developmental and health history, current functioning, examples from different settings, and information from others when appropriate. Clinicians also consider sleep problems, anxiety, depression, learning differences, substance use, medication effects, and physical conditions that can produce overlapping difficulties.

What to do if ADHD is questioned

If you are concerned about yourself or your child, record concrete examples: missed instructions, unfinished tasks, impulsive decisions, forgotten essentials, or problems managing time. Note where they occur, what reduces them, and how they affect education, work, relationships, or safety. This is more useful in an appointment than trying to prove a label.

A qualified clinician can evaluate the complete picture and explain whether ADHD, another condition, or several contributing factors fit. If someone dismisses your difficulties, describe their practical impact and request a structured assessment. Supportive routines and adjustments can still address real functional needs while the evaluation is underway.

When to seek professional help

Book an assessment when attention, impulsivity, restlessness, or organisation problems repeatedly interfere with daily responsibilities or cause distress. Earlier support is especially useful when difficulties are affecting school attendance, employment, relationships, driving, sleep, or the ability to care for yourself.

Use urgent local services if the person has thoughts of suicide or self-harm, cannot stay safe, becomes severely confused, or poses an immediate danger. These warning signs require prompt help regardless of whether ADHD has been diagnosed.

Questions to take to an appointment

You might ask which features support or do not support ADHD, what other explanations need checking, and whose observations would help. Also ask how the clinician will assess impact across settings, what support can begin now, and when the findings and next steps will be reviewed.

Questions people ask

Is ADHD simply a lack of discipline?

No. Clear expectations and routines can help, but ADHD-related difficulties are not adequately explained by laziness or poor discipline. Blame may hide the person's support needs and make it harder to discuss impairment openly.

Can adults have ADHD?

Yes. ADHD begins during development, but some people are not recognised until adulthood. Increasing demands or the loss of helpful structure can make longstanding difficulties with attention, planning, or impulse control more visible.

Does difficulty concentrating confirm ADHD?

No. Concentration problems have several possible causes. An ADHD assessment examines the wider symptom pattern, developmental history, impact in different settings, and possible alternative or coexisting conditions.
