Supporting ADHD in the classroom

A student may know the material yet miss instructions, lose work, call out, leave their seat, or submit incomplete assignments. Support should address the barrier without shaming the student, and observations from school should be combined with information from other settings rather than used alone to diagnose ADHD.

ADHD may present with difficulty concentrating during lengthy explanations, forgetting a sequence of instructions, rushing through questions, shifting attention toward nearby movement, or struggling to restart after an interruption. The student may perform unevenly because focus changes with interest, task length, noise, fatigue, structure, and the immediacy of feedback.

Learning differences, language needs, hearing or vision problems, anxiety, poor sleep, bullying, and an unsuitable level of academic challenge can produce similar classroom signs or coexist with ADHD. Teachers provide valuable examples, but clinical assessment also considers development, health, home functioning, and the student's own account.

Seat the student where instruction is easy to see and distractions can be managed without isolating them. Give brief instructions in both spoken and written form, ask the student to repeat the next action, divide long work into smaller checkpoints, and provide quiet prompts. Planned movement, predictable transitions, and specific feedback can support regulation.

Use one simple system for assignments and materials, and agree how home and school will share essential updates. Track the situations in which difficulties and successes occur, then review whether strategies are helping. Adjustments should preserve learning goals while changing how instructions, time, environment, or responses are organised.

Families can seek a clinical assessment when attention, impulsivity, or activity repeatedly limits learning, friendships, attendance, or emotional wellbeing across settings. School input is especially useful when it gives concrete examples, describes strategies already tried, and notes changes over time. A new or sudden decline should prompt review for sleep, health, stress, bullying, or another cause.

Act promptly if the student is running into danger, leaving supervised areas, threatening harm, being seriously bullied, or showing marked distress. Thoughts of self-harm, a suspected overdose, a seizure, or an immediate threat to safety require urgent local emergency or medical support.

Ask what information the clinician needs from teachers, whether learning, sleep, mood, hearing, or vision should be assessed, and how school support can be coordinated with treatment. If the student takes medication, discuss how benefits or side effects will be observed during the school day and who should receive relevant instructions.
