ADHD in preschool children

Many young children are energetic, act before thinking, and have short attention spans. The concern is a consistent pattern that is noticeably different from children at a similar developmental stage and interferes with play, learning, safety, family routines, or friendships.

A preschooler with ADHD may move rapidly between activities, struggle to listen to a short instruction, interrupt constantly, grab items, run or climb in unsafe situations, or find waiting very hard. The condition can also present with difficulty concentrating during age-appropriate stories or games. Behaviour needs to be considered at home and in nursery or another regular care setting.

Language delays, hearing or vision difficulties, poor sleep, anxiety, autism, learning differences, family stress, and other health concerns can produce similar behaviour or occur alongside ADHD. Assessment uses information from caregivers and educators, observation where appropriate, and a review of development and health rather than relying on a single test.

Use short instructions, say the child's name before speaking, and ask for one action at a time. Predictable routines, immediate specific praise, clear limits, movement breaks, and a calm place for quieter activities can make expectations easier to follow. Share the same simple strategies with nursery staff so the child receives consistent cues.

Record what happens before and after difficult moments, along with sleep, meals, and settings where the child manages well. Take this pattern to a GP or paediatric clinician. For young children, caregiver-focused behaviour support is commonly central; any decision about medication requires an individual specialist assessment and follow-up.

Book an assessment when behaviour persistently limits learning, play, friendships, or family life, or when nursery staff and caregivers see similar concerns. Earlier advice is sensible if impulsive running, climbing, or grabbing creates repeated safety risks, or if there are concerns about speech, hearing, sleep, growth, or loss of previously acquired skills.

Seek urgent medical care after a serious injury, suspected poisoning, breathing difficulty, seizure, or an abrupt and marked change in alertness or behaviour. These events need immediate evaluation rather than being attributed to ADHD.

Ask how your child's behaviour compares with developmental expectations, whether hearing, language, sleep, or another condition needs assessment, and what observations the nursery should provide. It can also help to ask which caregiver training or behavioural programme is suitable and how improvement will be judged at home and in nursery.
