ADHD and the autism spectrum

Short answer
ADHD and autism are different neurodevelopmental conditions, yet one person can have both and may need support for each.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Their relationship in brief
ADHD mainly involves persistent differences in attention regulation, impulse control, or activity. Autism involves differences in social communication and interaction together with restricted, repetitive, or strongly preferred patterns of behaviour, interests, or sensory experience.
Shared effects and distinct patterns
Both conditions can affect planning, transitions, emotional regulation, conversations, school, work, and relationships. Apparent inattention may reflect distraction in ADHD, sensory overload, difficulty shifting attention, an absorbing interest, anxiety, or several factors together. Restlessness and repeated movement can also have different functions.
An evaluation therefore looks at development and the reason behind behaviours, not only their appearance. It may explore communication style, friendships, routines, sensory responses, focused interests, organisation, impulsivity, learning, sleep, mood, and functioning in different environments. A diagnosis should describe the person's particular strengths and needs.
Seeking tailored support
Record concrete examples, their triggers, and what helps. Developmental or school reports may be useful, as can observations from someone who knows the person well. Ask for assessment by a clinician experienced in both ADHD and autism when features of both are present, because one condition can otherwise mask or complicate recognition of the other.
Support may include predictable routines, visual plans, quieter spaces, clear communication, task breakdown, psychological care, educational or workplace adjustments, and treatment of accompanying problems. Medication may address selected ADHD symptoms but does not remove autistic traits; prescribing decisions require individual review and monitoring.
Distress and safety concerns
Arrange clinical help when changes in attention, sensory distress, anxiety, irritability, sleep, or daily skills are disrupting life. Prompt review is appropriate for a sudden loss of usual abilities, severe withdrawal, escalating aggression, or inability to eat, drink, sleep, or manage essential care. If anyone has suicidal thoughts, is self-harming, or cannot remain safe, contact UAE emergency services or attend the nearest emergency department immediately.
Planning with the clinician
Ask how the assessment distinguishes overlapping features, whether communication or sensory needs can be accommodated during appointments, and who can advise on practical adjustments. Clarify which concern each proposed treatment targets, what adverse effects to watch for, and how outcomes will be reviewed in daily life.

Questions people ask
Can someone be diagnosed with both ADHD and autism?
Yes. A clinician can diagnose both when the full developmental and current pattern supports each condition.
Does one assessment cover both conditions?
Some services assess both, while others involve different professionals. Ask whether the clinician has experience recognising overlapping ADHD and autistic features.
Will ADHD treatment change autistic traits?
Treatment aimed at ADHD may help selected attention, activity, or impulse-control difficulties. Autistic communication, sensory, and routine needs should be understood and supported in their own right.
