ADHD and migraine: managing overlapping challenges

Short answer
ADHD and migraine can occur in the same person and may complicate routines, sleep and concentration.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Track the pattern
- Record headache features and accompanying symptoms, not only pain intensity.
- Routine support
- Prompts for meals, fluids and medicine can reduce avoidable disruption.
- Medicine safety
- Review frequent pain-medicine use and do not alter ADHD treatment without the prescriber.
The short answer
A migraine attack can involve headache, nausea and sensitivity to light or sound, sometimes with temporary neurological symptoms called aura. Care should address the headache pattern and ADHD needs without assuming every headache is migraine or a medicine effect.
Where the difficulties overlap
Migraine attacks can interrupt meals, sleep, hydration, work and medication routines. Pain and sensory sensitivity can temporarily worsen focus, while ADHD-related planning difficulties may make it harder to notice patterns or take prescribed treatment early in an attack. Stress, missed meals and irregular sleep may be relevant for some people, but triggers differ and are not always identifiable.
A clinician will usually ask how the headache starts, where it is felt, what accompanies it, how it changes activity and which medicines are used. The review may also consider vision, blood pressure, sleep and whether the headache pattern changed after starting or adjusting treatment.
Make the care plan easier to follow
Use a simple headache diary that records onset, accompanying symptoms, sleep, meals, possible triggers and what treatment helped. Set prompts for regular food, fluids and prescribed medicines. Keep the clinician-approved acute treatment in an easy-to-find place, and agree in advance what to do if nausea prevents taking it.
Avoid repeatedly using extra pain medicine without review, because frequent use can itself sustain headaches. If an ADHD medicine appears linked to headaches, tell the prescriber rather than stopping or changing it independently. Preventive migraine treatment may be considered when attacks are frequent, prolonged or disabling.
Headache signs that need urgent care
Seek emergency care for a sudden, extremely severe headache; headache after a significant head injury; or headache with weakness, facial droop, trouble speaking, fainting, seizure, confusion, fever with a stiff neck, or new loss of vision. Prompt assessment is also needed for a distinctly new or rapidly changing pattern, especially during pregnancy or after birth. Do not drive yourself if vision, awareness or movement is affected.
Questions for your appointment
Ask which features support a migraine diagnosis, whether any current medicine could be contributing, when to use acute treatment, and whether prevention is appropriate. Confirm which aura or neurological symptoms fit your known pattern and which changes should trigger emergency assessment.

Questions people ask
Can ADHD medicine cause headaches?
Headache can occur with some medicines, but dehydration, missed meals, poor sleep and migraine are other possibilities. The timing and pattern help the prescriber assess it.
Is every visual symptom a migraine aura?
No. New vision loss, a major change from your usual pattern or visual symptoms with weakness or speech trouble need urgent assessment.
What should I include in a headache diary?
Note when it began, pain location, nausea, light or sound sensitivity, neurological symptoms, sleep, meals, medicines taken and how the episode affected activity.
