ADHD and autism symptoms

Short answer
ADHD and autism have different core features, although attention, regulation and daily functioning difficulties can overlap.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- ADHD pattern
- Differences in regulating attention, activity and impulses.
- Autism pattern
- Social-communication differences with repetitive patterns, focused interests or sensory needs.
- Overlap
- Executive-function strain and overwhelm can occur with either condition.
The short answer
ADHD commonly presents with persistent problems regulating attention, activity or impulses. Autism commonly presents with differences in social communication and interaction, alongside restricted or repetitive patterns, focused interests, sensory differences or a preference for sameness. Either condition can involve executive-function strain, overwhelm and emotional dysregulation.
Patterns matter more than a single trait
Difficulty switching tasks can arise from ADHD-related attention regulation, an autistic need for predictability, or both. Social interruptions may reflect impulsivity, difficulty reading conversational cues, excitement or anxiety. Intense focus can also occur in both, but the reason, context and effect differ between people.
Clinicians look for a pattern beginning during development and causing meaningful difficulty in more than one part of life. They also consider sleep loss, anxiety, depression, trauma, learning differences, substance use and physical health because these can resemble or amplify some features. A symptom list alone cannot show which explanation fits.
How to record a useful symptom history
For each concern, note an example, when it began, where it happens and what consequence follows. Include strengths and successful strategies as well as difficulties. Childhood reports, past evaluations and observations from a trusted relative or partner can add context when available.
Discuss persistent concerns with a clinician experienced in developmental or mental health assessment. Helpful everyday measures may include visual schedules, breaking work into smaller actions, reducing sensory distractions, planning transitions and using written communication. These strategies can be adjusted to the actual barrier rather than a presumed label.
Signs that need professional attention
Seek a routine assessment when difficulties persist and disrupt learning, employment, relationships, sleep or self-care. Get urgent help for thoughts or plans of self-harm, dangerous impulsive behaviour, severe agitation, hallucinations, marked confusion or an abrupt change from the person's usual functioning.
What to ask during assessment
Ask which features point toward ADHD, autism or another explanation; whether both conditions will be evaluated; and how information from childhood is used. It is also reasonable to ask how sleep, mood and anxiety will be checked, and what practical support is available while the evaluation proceeds.

Questions people ask
Is poor concentration enough to identify ADHD?
No. ADHD presents as a broader, persistent pattern, and clinicians check whether sleep, mood, anxiety, medicines or physical health better explain concentration problems.
Can a person have both ADHD and autism?
Yes. The conditions can occur together, and an assessment can examine how each set of features contributes to everyday difficulties.
Are sensory sensitivities exclusive to autism?
No. Sensory difficulties can have several explanations. In autism, clinicians consider them as part of the wider developmental and behavioural pattern.
