Adenovirus laryngitis and voice care

The larynx contains the vocal folds. When adenovirus inflames and swells their lining, they do not vibrate normally, producing a rough, breathy or weak voice. The same infection may bring a sore throat, dry cough, runny nose, red eyes or fever.

A clinician usually identifies laryngitis from the symptom pattern and an examination of the mouth, throat and breathing. Persistent or recurrent hoarseness may need a closer look because reflux, heavy voice use, smoke exposure, vocal-fold lesions and other conditions can produce similar changes.

Rest the voice by speaking less and using a comfortable volume. Whispering can strain the vocal folds, so avoid forcing a whisper or trying to speak over background noise. Sip fluids, use humidified air if it feels soothing, and avoid smoking, vaping and smoky rooms.

Simple pain or fever medicine may help when it is safe for you; follow the label and check with a pharmacist if you have other conditions or take other medicines. Antibiotics do not treat adenovirus. Decongestants and medicated throat products can cause side effects and are not suitable for everyone.

Seek emergency help for difficult breathing, blue or grey lips, harsh noisy breathing at rest, drooling with inability to swallow, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or severe drowsiness. A child who is pulling in at the ribs, struggling for breath or unable to drink also needs urgent assessment.

Arrange a clinical review when hoarseness persists after the other infection symptoms have cleared, repeatedly returns, or occurs with a neck lump, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss or pain when swallowing. People who depend on their voice for work may benefit from earlier assessment and tailored voice advice.

Ask whether the pattern fits viral laryngitis, whether reflux or an irritant could be prolonging symptoms, and how to return to normal voice use. Mention smoking or vaping, recent intubation, repeated episodes, swallowing trouble and any medicine that dries the throat.
