Short answer

Adductor pollicis and adductor brevis are different muscles, so the pain location determines the appropriate next steps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Thumb muscle
Adductor pollicis helps bring the thumb toward the palm for pinch and grip.
Groin muscle
Adductor brevis is an inner-thigh muscle that helps draw the leg inward.
Assessment clue
The exact location and the movement that reproduces pain help guide examination.

Direct answer

Adductor pollicis is in the hand and helps pull the thumb toward the palm. Adductor brevis is in the inner thigh and helps move the leg toward the body's midline. Pinch-related thumb pain and activity-related groin pain therefore need different assessments.

What the name may mean

Pain near the base of the thumb may involve the adductor pollicis, but nearby joints, tendons, nerves and ligaments can produce similar discomfort. Symptoms may be noticed while pinching a key, opening a lid or gripping an object.

Pain high on the inner thigh or at the groin may involve the adductor brevis or another adductor muscle. It can follow a sudden change of direction, kicking, running or a gradual increase in training load. Hip joint problems can also present with groin pain, so the sore spot alone does not establish the cause.

What you can do now

Reduce the movement that clearly aggravates the area, but keep comfortable movement where possible. For thumb pain, temporarily limit forceful pinching and heavy gripping. For groin pain, scale back sprinting, kicking, deep side lunges and rapid direction changes.

A wrapped cold pack may help after a recent flare; protect the skin and stop if it causes numbness or irritation. Do not force a painful stretch or repeatedly test strength against sharp pain. If symptoms persist, recur or restrict daily activity, a clinician or physiotherapist can examine strength, range of motion, tenderness and the joints above and below the painful area.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt assessment after a significant injury if you cannot use the thumb, grip safely, bear weight or walk normally, or if there is marked swelling, bruising, deformity or rapidly worsening pain.

Seek urgent care for a cold, pale or blue thumb; new loss of sensation; severe weakness; or pain with spreading redness, warmth, fever or feeling acutely unwell. Sudden groin pain with a new lump, severe abdominal or testicular pain, or vomiting also needs urgent medical assessment.

Questions for your clinician

Ask which structure appears to be painful, what movements are safe to continue, whether temporary support or activity changes would help, and which findings would prompt imaging or referral. Mention exactly where the pain starts, what action triggers it, whether it began suddenly, and any weakness, clicking, numbness, swelling or pain at rest.

Questions people ask

Is adductor pollicis brevis one muscle?

No. Adductor pollicis is a thumb muscle, while adductor brevis is an inner-thigh muscle. The combined phrase can cause confusion, so identify whether the symptoms are in the hand or groin.

Should I stretch an adductor that hurts?

Gentle, comfortable movement may be reasonable, but avoid forcing a stretch into sharp pain. The suitable exercise depends on whether the painful structure is in the thumb, inner thigh, hip or another nearby area.

Can a hip problem cause pain felt in the groin?

Yes. Hip impingement, a hip labral tear and hip osteoarthritis can present with groin pain, although groin symptoms can also arise from muscles and other structures. An examination helps distinguish these possibilities.
