Adductor muscle pain: causes and next steps

Short answer

Adductor muscle pain is felt along the inner thigh or groin and can follow overload, strain or tendon irritation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is adductor muscle pain?

It may be sharp during a sudden movement or ache after running, kicking, side-stepping or squeezing the knees together. Tenderness can be near the pubic bone or farther down the inner thigh. Pain in this region does not identify one cause by itself.

What else can feel like adductor pain?

The adductors can become painful after a sudden strain or a faster rise in exercise load than they can tolerate. Tendon-related pain is often focused near the attachment at the groin and may be sensitive to repeated loading.

Hip impingement, a hip labral tear and hip osteoarthritis can each present with groin pain, sometimes with stiffness, clicking or reduced hip movement. Abdominal-wall, urinary or reproductive-system problems can also be felt in the groin. An examination considers the full pattern instead of assuming the sore spot is the source.

How to respond to adductor pain

Reduce the specific movements that create sharp pain, but keep walking and moving the hip within a tolerable range if you can do so without a worsening limp. Do not repeatedly press, stretch or test the painful point. Note whether symptoms relate to speed, stride length, direction changes or sitting.

When discomfort is settling, gradual strengthening can restore tolerance. Begin with controlled effort and increase resistance, range and speed separately. If the pain returns whenever activity rises, a physiotherapist can check adductor strength, hip motion and how your training or work load is changing.

Signs that need assessment

Arrange a clinical review for pain that persists, repeatedly interrupts activity, causes a limp or comes with restricted hip movement. Prompt assessment is also warranted after an injury with a snap, extensive bruising or an inability to continue walking.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe groin pain with testicular or abdominal pain, fever, vomiting or feeling very unwell. After trauma, inability to bear weight, deformity, numbness, or a cold or pale leg also calls for urgent evaluation.

Questions that clarify the cause

Ask whether the pain appears to come from muscle, tendon, hip joint or another structure; which findings support that view; and what change would prompt imaging. Request a clear loading plan with examples of acceptable and excessive symptom responses.

Questions people ask

Can hip problems cause pain near the adductors?

Yes. Hip impingement, a labral tear and osteoarthritis can present with groin pain, so hip motion and associated symptoms form part of the assessment.

Why does squeezing my knees hurt?

Squeezing activates the adductor muscles and can provoke a sensitive muscle or tendon. The finding helps guide an examination but does not establish the diagnosis alone.

Should I exercise through adductor pain?

Avoid pushing through sharp or escalating pain. Choose a manageable effort, watch the response during and after activity, and progress one loading variable at a time.
