Short answer

In women, adductor longus pain can cause activity-related inner-thigh or groin discomfort, but pelvic and hip problems can feel similar.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Adductor muscle, hip, pelvis, abdomen or urinary tract

A clear overview

Pain after sprinting, kicking, slipping or a wide step may involve the adductor muscles. Pain connected with the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, urinary symptoms, vaginal bleeding or lower-abdominal symptoms deserves broader medical consideration rather than being assumed to be muscular.

Clues from the symptom pattern

An adductor-related pattern may include local tenderness and discomfort when the thigh presses inward against resistance. The pain may increase with running, lateral lunges or turning quickly and ease when those loads are reduced.

Hip impingement, a hip labral tear and hip osteoarthritis can present with groin pain, sometimes alongside stiffness, clicking or restricted hip motion. Pelvic, abdominal and urinary causes require different assessment. Sex alone does not identify which structure is responsible.

Practical next steps

Temporarily scale back movements that cause sharp groin pain, especially rapid direction changes, forceful squeezing or deep wide stances. Continue comfortable daily movement and record links with exercise, cycle timing, pregnancy status and pelvic or urinary symptoms to help the assessment.

When examination supports an adductor source, progressive strengthening can build tolerance from controlled contractions toward running and sport tasks. Sports physiotherapy may help coordinate hip, pelvic and trunk loading while respecting pregnancy or postpartum changes where relevant.

Urgent and routine assessment

Seek urgent medical care for sudden severe pelvic or lower-abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, fainting, chest pain or breathlessness. Urgent review is also needed after injury if you cannot bear weight, or if the leg becomes deformed, numb, weak, cold or pale.

Arrange a non-emergency appointment for persistent or recurring pain, a new groin lump, fever, pain during urination, unusual discharge, unexplained bleeding or symptoms that interfere with sleep and normal walking. Tell the clinician if pregnancy is possible.

Topics to raise at your visit

Ask whether the examination points to an adductor, hip, pelvic or abdominal source; whether a pelvic health assessment is appropriate; and which exercises fit your current circumstances. Request specific guidance about returning to running, gym work or childcare lifting.

Questions people ask

Is adductor longus pain different in women?

The muscle can be loaded and injured in similar ways across sexes, but reproductive, pelvic and urinary symptoms broaden the possible sources of groin pain in women.

Can groin pain be related to pregnancy?

Pregnancy can coincide with pelvic or groin symptoms for several reasons. A maternity clinician or physiotherapist can assess the pattern and advise suitable activity.

Should cycle-related groin pain be ignored?

No. A repeated relationship with the menstrual cycle is useful diagnostic information, particularly when pain is accompanied by pelvic, bowel or bleeding symptoms.
