Its small format makes it convenient to carry, but the usefulness of the view depends on careful technique, a suitable ear speculum, working light and power, and correct interpretation of what is seen.

The light and magnifying window can help a clinician see earwax, irritation, swelling, discharge, foreign material, and visible changes in the eardrum. The examination is one part of an assessment; symptoms, hearing changes, recent swimming or flying, respiratory illness, injury, and previous ear problems all affect interpretation.

A pocket model serves the same basic examination purpose as a larger otoscope. Available illumination, power source, attachments, and maintenance requirements can differ between models, so the instructions supplied with the exact device matter.

A trained user selects a speculum that fits comfortably, steadies the hand against the person's head, and looks without forcing the tip deeper into the canal. Stop if insertion causes pain or if the person moves suddenly. A deeply placed object requires appropriate clinical removal rather than an attempt with the otoscope.

Use compatible attachments, keep the viewing window clean, check that the light is clear before an examination, and follow the manufacturer's cleaning and battery guidance. Dispose of single-use specula after use; reusable parts need the stated decontamination process before another person uses them.

Book an assessment for ear pain that persists or returns, fluid or blood from the ear, new reduced hearing, troublesome ringing, dizziness, or a suspected object in the canal. Obtain urgent medical help for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness with difficulty walking, weakness of the face, significant head injury, or an object such as a battery lodged in the ear.

Ask whether both ears were fully visible, whether wax blocked the examination, what the eardrum looked like, and whether you need wax removal, a hearing assessment, medicine, monitoring, or referral. Mention any prior eardrum perforation before putting drops into the ear.
