ADC otoscope: what patients should know

ADC refers to a manufacturer, while otoscope describes the type of device. A clinician uses its light, magnifying lens and disposable or cleaned tip to look for wax, swelling, discharge, a foreign object or changes behind the eardrum.

The clinician selects a tip that fits the ear opening, gently adjusts the outer ear and looks into the canal. The instrument should remain under direct control and is not pushed deeply. The view may help identify inflammation or blockage, but findings are interpreted alongside pain, hearing change, fever, discharge and recent illness.

An otoscope does not by itself test the full range of hearing or prove the cause of every ear complaint. Wax, a narrow canal, movement or discharge can limit the view. The clinician may clean accessible material safely, repeat the examination or arrange hearing tests or specialist assessment.

Tell the clinician about ear surgery, ventilation tubes, a suspected perforated eardrum, recent injury, discharge, hearing aids or an object in the ear. Explain where the pain is and whether symptoms began after swimming, flying, noise exposure or an upper respiratory illness.

Keep still during the examination and say immediately if it causes sharp pain or dizziness. Young children can sit securely on a caregiver's lap while the clinician explains positioning. Do not insert cotton buds, tools or a home otoscope tip into a painful ear, as this can push material deeper or injure the canal or eardrum.

Arrange prompt assessment for new ear discharge, persistent pain, fever, reduced hearing, a suspected object, or symptoms after an injury. Button batteries and sharp objects in the ear require urgent professional removal; do not add drops or attempt extraction at home.

Seek urgent help for swelling or redness behind the ear, an ear that begins to stick out, severe headache, facial weakness, confusion, marked drowsiness, sudden hearing loss or severe dizziness with neurological symptoms. These warning signs matter independently of what a home view appears to show.

Ask whether the whole eardrum was visible, what specific changes were seen, whether hearing should be tested and how to protect the ear while it recovers. If treatment is recommended, confirm how to use it and what change should trigger reassessment.
