It is given by injection beneath the skin for selected immune-mediated conditions. The prescribed schedule depends on the condition and product, and changes should be made by the treating clinician.

The medicine binds to tumour necrosis factor, often shortened to TNF. This signal helps drive inflammation, but it also contributes to immune defence. Blocking it can ease inflammatory disease while making some infections harder for the body to contain.

Before treatment, the clinical team usually checks for tuberculosis and may assess hepatitis, vaccination history, current infections and other medical conditions. Tell them about previous serious infections, heart failure, nerve or demyelinating disorders, liver problems, cancer history, pregnancy plans and every medicine or supplement you use.

Take each dose on the schedule written for you and learn the injection method from a trained professional. Record doses if that prevents uncertainty, rotate injection areas and dispose of needles or pens in a sharps container. Store the medicine exactly as its packaging directs and protect it from freezing, heat and unnecessary light.

Check with the prescribing team before receiving vaccines, starting another immune-suppressing drug or undergoing surgery. Do not stop merely because the skin improves, and do not take an extra dose after a missed injection without advice. During an active infection or after close exposure to tuberculosis or certain contagious illnesses, contact the team before the next dose.

Emergency assessment is needed for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, collapse or another severe allergic response. Promptly report fever, chills, a lasting cough, breathlessness, burning urine, shingles-like blisters, a wound that is worsening, marked fatigue, unexplained bruising, pale skin or jaundice.

New numbness, weakness, visual disturbance, chest discomfort, swollen ankles or rapidly increasing breathlessness also warrant timely contact with a clinician. Mild injection-site irritation may settle, but expanding redness, warmth, pus or worsening pain can indicate infection.

Request a clear monitoring plan: which blood tests or examinations are expected, whom to call if illness develops and what should happen around surgery or travel. Ask how benefit will be judged and what alternatives are available if the condition remains active or side effects become troublesome.
