Adalimumab: generic name and medicine type

A prescription, clinic note, or pharmacy label may show both the active name and a product brand. Recognising adalimumab helps you identify the medicine even when the outer packaging or injection device has a less familiar name.

Adalimumab is a biologic medicine rather than a chemically simple tablet. It blocks tumour necrosis factor, a messenger involved in inflammation, and clinicians use it for selected immune-mediated conditions affecting the skin and other organs. Because biologics are made in living systems and have complex structures, an alternative manufacturer produces a biosimilar, not a conventional generic copy.

The active-name match does not make every product detail interchangeable. Brands may use different injection devices, inactive ingredients, storage leaflets, or packaging.

Keep an up-to-date medicine list that records adalimumab, the product brand, the prescribed strength, and your schedule. Show it when visiting a new clinician, arranging a procedure, discussing vaccination, or collecting medicine from a different pharmacy. Before an injection, make sure the label belongs to you and matches the product you were taught to use.

If the brand or device changes, ask for an explanation and fresh technique guidance. Do not adjust timing, stop therapy, or substitute another product by yourself, because treatment gaps and dosing errors can affect disease control or safety.

Call the prescribing service if the active name is absent from an unfamiliar pack, the dose differs from your plan, the injection device is damaged, or you have stored it incorrectly. Prompt clinical advice is also appropriate for fever or signs of infection. Breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, or collapse after an injection requires emergency care.
