Symptoms of acute laryngitis

A dry cough, tickling sensation, discomfort when talking, and an urge to clear the throat may accompany the voice change. When a respiratory virus is responsible, symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, tiredness, or fever can occur as part of that infection.

Swollen vocal cords vibrate less freely and may not close in their usual way. The result can shift through the day: the voice may begin rough, tire quickly, crack, or require more effort. Throat clearing can feel helpful for a moment but repeatedly brings the vocal cords together. Symptoms after shouting or singing may be dominated by voice fatigue, while infection-related laryngitis can include broader nose and throat complaints.

Rest the voice when it feels tired and avoid whispering, yelling, or repeatedly testing whether it has returned. Take regular sips of water and move away from smoke or fumes. Swallowing or sipping water can replace forceful throat clearing. Note whether symptoms began with a cold, after demanding voice use, or around reflux sensations, because the pattern can help a clinician identify the likely source.

Difficulty getting air, noisy breathing, drooling, inability to swallow, bluish or grey lips, coughing blood, or rapidly increasing neck swelling requires urgent care. A child who is working hard to breathe, unusually sleepy, or unable to drink also needs immediate assessment. See a clinician for a voice change that persists or recurs, particularly with a neck lump, worsening pain, unexplained weight loss, or no clear cold or voice-strain trigger.

Describe how your voice changed, whether speaking hurts, and what other symptoms started before or after it. Ask whether the vocal cords need to be viewed if the problem continues. Mention smoking or vaping, inhaled substances, reflux symptoms, recent illness, new medicines, neck injury, and the amount of speaking or singing your day requires.
