What should you know about acute fever?

Short answer

An acute fever is a sudden rise in body temperature, often caused by the immune response to an infection.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main priority
Comfort, fluids and observation for warning signs
Useful record
Temperature method, symptoms, medicines and fluid intake
Emergency signs
Breathing difficulty, confusion, seizure, stiff neck or a non-fading rash

The short answer

How unwell the person looks and feels matters alongside the temperature reading. Most care focuses on comfort, fluids and watching for warning signs while the underlying cause becomes clearer.

What an acute fever may mean

Fever can accompany respiratory, skin and other infections. Chills, sweating, tiredness, muscle aches or reduced appetite may occur with it. The pattern of other symptoms—such as cough, breathing difficulty, rash, painful urination or a tender red area of skin—helps a clinician investigate the cause.

A thermometer gives a more useful reading than judging warmth by touch. Note where and how the temperature was measured because readings can differ by method.

What you can do now

Rest, drink regularly and wear light, comfortable clothing. Offer a child frequent fluids and continue feeding when tolerated. Avoid cold baths or heavy wrapping, which can worsen discomfort or shivering.

If you use a fever medicine, follow the label for the person's age and health, and check that another cold or flu product does not contain the same ingredient. Aspirin is not suitable for children. Record temperatures, symptoms, medicines and fluid intake if the illness continues.

When to seek medical care

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, a seizure, a stiff neck, a rash that does not fade under pressure, or difficulty waking the person. A fever in a very young baby needs prompt medical assessment.

Arrange clinical advice when fever persists, repeatedly returns, follows recent travel, or occurs with dehydration, worsening pain, immune suppression or pregnancy. Get earlier help when a child is not drinking, has fewer wet nappies, is unusually drowsy or is steadily getting worse.

Questions for your clinician

Ask what cause fits the accompanying symptoms, whether an examination or test is needed, which medicines are suitable with your current conditions, and what specific change should trigger reassessment. Mention recent travel, sick contacts, new medicines, vaccination history and any condition that affects immunity.

Questions people ask

Should every fever be treated with medicine?

Not necessarily. Fever medicine is mainly used for discomfort; rest, fluids and monitoring remain important. Use only a product and dose suitable for the person's age and health.

Can antibiotics treat an acute fever?

Antibiotics treat certain bacterial infections, not fever itself or viral infections. A clinician decides whether they are appropriate after considering the symptoms and examination.
