Treatment for Actinic Keratosis on the Lip

Actinic keratosis affecting the lip is often called actinic cheilitis. A dermatologist assesses whether the change is a small defined spot or involves a broader section of the lip, and checks for thickening, ulceration, bleeding, or a firm area that could require a biopsy before treatment.

A focal lesion may be treated with a lesion-directed procedure, while widespread surface change may suit a field treatment. These findings do not establish cancer, but they can warrant a biopsy to distinguish persistent actinic damage from squamous cell carcinoma or another lip disorder.
