How Actinic Keratosis Is Treated

A dermatologist first confirms that the lesion is appropriate for treatment. A spot that is unusually thick, tender, ulcerated, rapidly changing, or diagnostically uncertain may need tissue sampling before a treatment plan is chosen.

Cryotherapy is often used for a clearly defined lesion and works by freezing abnormal tissue. Curettage or another removal procedure may be considered for a thick surface, particularly when tissue examination would be useful.

Prescription creams such as imiquimod or topical fluorouracil can treat clinically visible and less obvious changes across an affected field. Photodynamic therapy applies a light-sensitive medicine and then activates it with a specific light. Each approach has a different pattern of inflammation, healing, cosmetic change, and clinic involvement.

Follow the exact instructions for where and how to apply a prescription product; extending it onto unaffected skin can intensify irritation. Before starting, clarify which reaction is expected, when to pause, what wound care is suitable, and whether other active skincare products should be withheld.

Keep follow-up even if the surface looks clear, because the clinician needs to check healing and decide whether any persistent roughness requires reassessment. Continue shade, protective clothing, and broad-spectrum sunscreen to limit additional ultraviolet damage.

Contact the treating team if pain is severe or worsening, redness spreads well beyond the intended area, pus appears, you develop fever, or swelling affects the eyes or breathing. These findings are different from the local redness and crusting that some treatments are designed to produce.

A lesion that remains firm, thick, ulcerated, or repeatedly bleeding after healing should be examined again. Persistence does not identify the cause by itself, but it can signal that the diagnosis or treatment needs reconsideration.

Discuss whether the priority is one lesion or the entire damaged field, whether biopsy is needed first, and how location affects healing. Ask what discomfort and appearance changes to expect, which activities or products to avoid, and what result would lead to another treatment.
