Actinic Keratosis Dermoscopy: What the Examination Shows

A handheld instrument combines magnification and controlled light, helping the clinician see structures that are difficult to judge with the unaided eye. The examination is quick and can guide whether a spot looks suitable for treatment, monitoring, or tissue sampling.

Actinic keratosis can show a rough or scaly surface over a pink or red background, with changes arranged around hair follicles. Pigmented lesions may contain brown or grey areas, so their appearance can overlap with other sun-related growths.

No single dermoscopic feature settles every diagnosis. The dermatologist interprets the pattern together with touch, location, change over time, previous treatment, and the surrounding sun-damaged skin. If the findings are uncertain or concerning, a biopsy provides tissue for examination under a microscope.

Leave the area free of makeup, concealer, thick moisturiser, or self-tanning product if practical. Bring photographs that show earlier changes and mention bleeding, tenderness, rapid thickening, previous skin cancers, immune-suppressing medicines, and any treatment already applied.

After assessment, management may target one lesion or a broader field of damaged skin. Options can include freezing, prescription creams, or light-activated treatment; the choice depends on the clinical findings, site, thickness, and number of affected areas.

Book a dermatology review for a persistent rough patch that is growing, becoming thicker, repeatedly bleeding, forming an open sore, or becoming distinctly painful or tender. These changes do not establish cancer, but they warrant direct examination because actinic keratosis can sometimes resemble or develop into squamous cell carcinoma.

Seek earlier assessment if you have a weakened immune system or a history of skin cancer. Do not scrape, burn, or repeatedly pick the spot while waiting, because injury can obscure its surface and delay healing.

Ask which features support actinic keratosis, whether any area needs biopsy, and whether treatment should address the individual spot or the surrounding field. You can also ask what skin changes to photograph, how the treated area should heal, and when it should be checked again.
