Field treatments such as topical fluorouracil are applied across an affected zone to treat visible and less obvious altered cells. Redness, soreness, crusting and erosion can be part of the expected reaction, so the prescriber should explain when to pause and how to care for the lip. Photodynamic therapy combines a light-sensitive medicine with a controlled light source.

Physical treatments target damaged tissue more directly. Freezing may suit a small focus, while a resurfacing laser can treat a broader lip surface. Surgical removal of the altered surface may be considered for extensive or more advanced change. A biopsy may be performed before treatment when examination raises concern for invasive disease.

Tell the clinician about previous cold sores, wound-healing problems, immune suppression, smoking, allergies and all medicines. Ask whether antiviral prevention is relevant, which products to stop near the lip, and whether eating or speaking may be uncomfortable during recovery. Arrange practical support if the proposed procedure is likely to cause swelling or a raw surface.

Follow the supplied cleansing and ointment instructions, avoid picking crusts, and protect the healing lip from sun. Continue broad-spectrum lip sunscreen and a broad-brimmed hat after recovery because treatment does not prevent new ultraviolet injury. Attend follow-up so the clinician can confirm healing and check for recurrent or new areas.

Contact the clinic if pain, swelling or discharge is greater than the team advised, or if redness spreads beyond the treatment zone. Fever, difficulty drinking, rapidly increasing swelling, breathing trouble or swallowing difficulty needs urgent care. After healing, a firm lump, persistent ulcer, repeated bleeding or focal thickening should be reassessed promptly rather than waiting for a routine check.
