Acrylic nails and nail fungus

Discolouration, thickening, crumbling or lifting beneath an enhancement can also come from staining, irritation, trauma, psoriasis or a bacterial infection. Covering the change with another artificial nail can conceal progression and delay the correct treatment.

Filing and repeated application can thin or separate the natural nail. A gap between the acrylic and nail plate may retain water and debris, creating an environment where microorganisms can grow. Nail fungus commonly causes a yellow, white or brown colour, thickening, brittle edges and material beneath the nail, but appearance alone cannot confirm it.

A clinician may clip or scrape a small sample before choosing treatment. That check matters because antifungal medicine will not correct damage caused by allergy, injury or another nail disorder.

Have the enhancement removed gently rather than pulling or prising it off. Keep the exposed nail short, clean and dry, avoid fresh polish or extensions, and do not share clippers or files. Clean reusable tools and allow shoes to dry fully if toenails are involved. Treat scaling or itching between the toes as well, because a fungal skin infection can spread to nails.

Treatment depends on which organism is found and how much of the nail is affected. A clinician may consider a prescription topical antifungal, an oral antifungal, thinning or trimming the nail, or a nail procedure. Oral medicines can interact with other medicines and may require health checks, so they should not be borrowed or self-started.

Book an assessment when a nail remains discoloured, thick, crumbly or detached after the acrylic is removed. Seek care sooner for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness or fever. Prompt review is also sensible if you have diabetes, reduced circulation, reduced sensation or a weakened immune system, because a small nail injury may be harder to heal.

Ask whether a nail sample is needed, what else could explain the colour change, how to use the chosen treatment around the nail edges, and when improvement should become visible as healthy nail grows. Mention pregnancy, liver or kidney problems, and every medicine or supplement you take before discussing oral therapy.
