Short answer

Peeling on palms or soles can follow irritation, moisture, infection or inflammation, and its pattern helps guide the next step.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Dry damp areas and moisturise intact dry skin

The short answer

Look at whether one or both sides are involved, whether the spaces between toes are affected, and whether there is itch, pain, redness, blisters or nail change. These details are more useful than peeling alone.

What different patterns may suggest

Athlete's foot often causes scaling or cracking between toes or across a sole and may involve toenails. Psoriasis can affect palms and soles with thicker, sharply defined, cracked areas and may occur with changes elsewhere on the body. Sunburn can peel after exposed skin becomes red and tender. Frequent washing, sweaty footwear, friction and contact with cleaning products can also disrupt the outer skin barrier.

Peeling skin can accompany any of these conditions, but the symptom does not identify its cause. A clinician may inspect the distribution, ask about exposures and take a skin scraping when a fungal infection is uncertain.

Gentle care while you identify the cause

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser, pat rather than rub, and apply a plain moisturiser to intact dry skin. Change damp socks, let shoes dry, and avoid sharing footwear when fungal infection is possible. Wear protective gloves for wet work or cleaning products.

Do not pull attached skin or apply strong acids, bleach, essential oils or multiple medicated creams together. A pharmacist or clinician can help select an antifungal when the pattern fits, but steroid cream used alone may alter an untreated fungal rash. Mention new medicines and recent illness during assessment.

When peeling needs medical attention

Arrange a review when peeling keeps returning, spreads, affects the nails, forms deep painful cracks, or does not improve with sensible care. Earlier assessment is appropriate if you have diabetes, reduced circulation, loss of sensation or a weakened immune system because small skin breaks can be harder to manage.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, severe pain, pus, fever, extensive blistering, sores on the mouth or eyes, or peeling that began after a new medicine. Those features can indicate infection or a serious skin reaction rather than simple dryness.

What to ask during assessment

Ask which diagnosis fits the distribution, whether a scraping or other test would separate fungal infection from inflammation, and which products should be stopped. Clarify where to apply treatment, how to care for cracks, whether household members need precautions, and which change means you should return sooner.

Questions people ask

Does peeling between the toes mean athlete's foot?

Athlete's foot commonly presents with peeling or cracking between toes, but irritation and other skin conditions can look similar. Persistent symptoms may need examination or a scraping.

Should I peel away loose skin?

Avoid pulling skin that is still attached because this can create a raw area. Trim only fully detached edges with clean tools and do not cut living skin.

Can moisturiser make foot peeling worse?

Moisturiser helps dry, intact skin, but heavy products between moist toes may trap dampness. Apply it according to the location and suspected cause.
