What should you know about acquired port wine stain?

Its appearance can resemble other vascular or inflammatory skin changes. A dermatologist can examine its colour, borders, texture and pattern, then decide whether further testing or treatment is appropriate.

The word acquired distinguishes this mark from a capillary malformation noticed at birth or in early infancy. It reflects persistently widened small blood vessels near the skin surface rather than trapped blood from a bruise.

The patch may be pink, red or purple and is generally flat at first. Its location, speed of development and any associated discomfort help the clinician separate it from mimics. The name describes an appearance; an examination is needed before assuming that a new coloured patch is this condition.

Arrange a dermatology appointment for a new persistent red or purple patch, especially if there was no clear injury. Note when it started, whether it changes with heat or pressure, and whether medicines, illness or trauma preceded it. Photographs in consistent lighting can document change without replacing an examination.

Treatment is optional when the diagnosis is secure and the mark causes no medical problem. If colour reduction is wanted, pulsed dye laser may be considered after review of skin tone, site and expectations. More than one session may be discussed, and temporary redness, swelling or pigment change can occur.

Seek prompt medical assessment if the area grows quickly, becomes raised, repeatedly bleeds, ulcerates, becomes painful or is accompanied by swelling, weakness, severe headache or changes in vision. These features do not establish the cause, but they require timely evaluation.

A patch near an eye or one associated with new neurological symptoms deserves particular attention. Sudden widespread purple spots, fever or feeling acutely unwell should be assessed urgently because that pattern is not typical of a stable vascular mark.
