Acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa

The hair may resemble lanugo, the delicate hair normally associated with fetal development, and can become noticeable on the face before involving wider areas. Because this uncommon pattern can accompany an underlying illness or, less often, another trigger, evaluation should focus on the cause before cosmetic hair removal.

This condition differs from coarse terminal-hair growth driven by androgens. The change is usually a diffuse increase in soft, unpigmented or lightly pigmented hair rather than a few coarse hairs on the chin. A clinician will confirm the hair type and ask how quickly it appeared and whether it is spreading.

The medical history may cover weight or appetite change, digestive symptoms, cough, pain, fatigue, menstrual or hormonal symptoms, medicines, supplements and nutritional health. Examination can include the skin, mouth, lymph nodes and other systems guided by symptoms. Tests or imaging are selected from the findings rather than ordered as a fixed cosmetic panel.
