Acneiform eruptions linked to medicines

It often consists of similar-looking inflamed bumps or pustules rather than the mixture of blackheads, whiteheads and deeper spots seen in ordinary acne. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own unless a clinician gives that instruction or you are receiving emergency care for a severe reaction.

The bumps may appear fairly suddenly and can involve the face, chest, back, shoulders or other areas. Itching, tenderness and widespread redness may occur, but the appearance varies with the medicine and the person. A clinician may consider the timing of every prescription, injection, supplement and non-prescription product, alongside an examination of the skin.

Several skin problems can resemble this reaction, including ordinary acne, folliculitis and other forms of drug rash. Photographs from before the eruption and a complete medicine list can make the sequence clearer.

Contact the prescriber and explain when the eruption began, where it started and whether it followed a new medicine or dose change. Use a gentle cleanser, avoid picking or scrubbing, and pause new cosmetic products that could further irritate the skin. Keep the medicine packaging or an accurate list available.

Management depends on the suspected trigger, the reason it was prescribed and the severity of the skin reaction. The prescriber may continue, adjust or replace a medicine and may arrange dermatology assessment; treatment should be selected for the actual rash rather than borrowed from someone else's acne routine.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, rapidly spreading blistering, peeling skin, or painful sores in the mouth, eyes or genitals. Fever, facial swelling, marked skin pain or a rash that spreads quickly also warrants prompt assessment. These features are not typical simple acne and may signal a more serious medicine reaction.

Ask which medicine is the leading suspect, whether it should be continued while you are assessed, and what changes would require urgent help. Also ask how to care for the skin, how improvement will be judged, and how the reaction should be recorded in your medical history.
