What should you know about acidic poop diaper rash?

Loose or frequent bowel movements can increase contact with digestive substances and repeated wiping, leaving the skin red, sore, or raw. The everyday label “acidic poop” describes the irritation; it does not establish the chemical acidity of the stool or identify a particular illness.

Irritant rash usually affects surfaces that touch the diaper, while deeper skin folds may be less involved. A rash with small surrounding spots or prominent fold involvement can have a yeast component, but appearance alone may not settle the cause. Stool changes may accompany diet changes, teething-age drooling, antibiotics, or a stomach illness without proving that any one factor caused the rash.

Change soiled diapers promptly. Clean with lukewarm water and soft cotton or a fragrance-free wipe, then pat rather than rub. Let the area dry briefly and apply a thick barrier ointment or paste; at the next change, remove only what is soiled instead of scrubbing every trace away. Avoid fragranced products, talc, antiseptics, and tight diapers on inflamed skin.

If yeast is suspected, a clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an antifungal is appropriate. Do not use a steroid, antibiotic, or combination cream on a baby unless a qualified professional has recommended the product and explained where and how to apply it.

Arrange medical advice if the rash is worsening despite gentle barrier care, repeatedly returns, spreads beyond the diaper area, or develops blisters, open sores, pus, crusting, bleeding, or marked swelling. Seek prompt assessment if the baby has fever, appears unusually sleepy or unwell, drinks poorly, has fewer wet diapers, or has persistent vomiting or diarrhoea. A newborn with a significant rash or illness signs should be assessed promptly.

Ask whether the pattern looks purely irritant or suggests yeast or bacterial infection, which barrier product suits the skin, and whether any current wipes or creams should be stopped. Mention recent antibiotics, new foods, stool frequency, fever, feeding changes, and the number of wet diapers because these details help guide assessment.
