Common acid reflux medication names

The first two are product types. Famotidine is a histamine blocker, while omeprazole, esomeprazole, lansoprazole and pantoprazole are proton pump inhibitors. Brand names and availability vary, so check the generic ingredient printed on the package.

Antacids neutralise existing acid and are generally used for short-lived relief. Alginates create a barrier above stomach contents. Famotidine reduces acid through histamine receptors. Proton pump inhibitors suppress acid more strongly and depend on appropriate timing and a planned course.

A familiar name does not make a medicine suitable for everyone. The choice may change with pregnancy, kidney or liver problems, age, previous stomach bleeding, the suspected diagnosis and other tablets. Some products combine ingredients, making the label especially important.

Show a pharmacist every prescription, supplement and non-prescription product you take. Ask them to identify the active ingredient, confirm the dose and timing, and check for duplication or interactions. Follow storage and administration directions rather than switching between brand names by appearance.

Avoid combining acid suppressants unless a clinician has provided a specific plan. Separate an antacid from other medicines when the label or pharmacist advises it, because absorption can be affected. Persistent symptoms should trigger reassessment instead of repeated changes between products.

Get advice if a medicine causes a rash, troublesome diarrhoea or constipation, severe headache, confusion, weakness or another new symptom. Arrange prompt assessment for difficulty swallowing, food sticking, repeated vomiting, black stools, vomiting blood, unexplained weight loss, persistent indigestion or worsening upper abdominal pain.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing difficulty, collapse, or severe chest pain with sweating, breathlessness or pain spreading to the jaw or arm. Stop treating those symptoms as routine heartburn while waiting for help.

Ask why this ingredient was selected, whether it treats the suspected cause or only symptoms, when improvement should be reviewed, and how it should be stopped. Confirm whether your presentation could reflect gastritis, an ulcer or Helicobacter pylori infection, which may require a different plan.
