Short answer

Acid reflux can start in the first trimester as pregnancy hormones relax the valve above the stomach and slow digestion.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical sensations
Burning behind the breastbone, sour taste, burping, or regurgitation
Useful first step
Eat smaller meals and remain upright afterwards
Medicine check
Confirm the active ingredient is suitable during pregnancy

The short answer

It may feel like burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, burping, or fluid rising into the throat. These symptoms can occur after eating or when lying down. Mild, occasional reflux is often manageable, but chest pain or persistent vomiting needs assessment rather than being assumed to be heartburn.

Why reflux may begin early

Hormonal changes can loosen the lower oesophageal sphincter, the ring of muscle that normally keeps stomach contents from moving upwards. Digestion may also become slower. In the first trimester, this hormonal effect can matter even though the uterus is not yet exerting the pressure associated with later pregnancy.

Reflux differs from nausea: reflux centres on burning or regurgitation, while nausea is the urge to vomit. They can happen together, and repeated vomiting may further irritate the oesophagus.

Ways to ease symptoms

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, and stay upright after food. Notice whether spicy, fatty, acidic, or caffeinated items trigger symptoms for you rather than restricting many foods automatically. Avoid eating close to bedtime, and raise your upper body during sleep if night-time reflux is troublesome.

Before using an antacid, alginate, herbal product, or acid-reducing medicine, check the exact product with a pharmacist, midwife, or doctor. Pregnancy suitability depends on the active ingredient and on your health history; do not rely only on a familiar brand name.

When to seek medical care

Arrange medical advice if symptoms are frequent, disturb sleep, make eating difficult, or continue despite practical changes. Seek urgent care for severe or crushing chest pain, shortness of breath, faintness, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or an inability to keep fluids down.

Later in pregnancy, severe pain high in the abdomen with a strong headache, visual disturbance, sudden swelling, or feeling very unwell requires urgent maternity assessment because these can be warning signs linked with pre-eclampsia, not routine reflux.

Questions for your maternity clinician

Ask which medicines fit your trimester and medical history, whether any current medicine may worsen reflux, and what to do if nausea or vomiting prevents regular meals. Describe where the discomfort occurs, its relationship to food or activity, and any trouble swallowing so that other causes can be considered.

Questions people ask

Can reflux really happen this early in pregnancy?

Yes. Hormonal changes can affect the valve above the stomach and slow digestion during the first trimester, before pressure from the growing uterus becomes a major factor.

Should I stop eating every food that can cause heartburn?

No broad restriction is usually needed. Track your own pattern, reduce foods that reliably trigger symptoms, and maintain a varied pregnancy-appropriate diet where possible.

Can I take my usual heartburn remedy?

Check the exact active ingredient and dose with a pharmacist, midwife, or doctor first, because products sold under similar names may contain different ingredients.
