Short answer

Acid-like stomach pain may come from irritation or reflux, but its location and accompanying symptoms determine whether medical assessment is needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Useful description
Exact site, type of pain, onset, meal link, and associated symptoms
Gentle measures
Smaller meals, fluids, upright posture, and avoiding clear triggers
Emergency signs
Sudden severe pain, collapse, vomiting blood, black stools, or chest pressure

What the sensation can represent

People use “acid pain” to describe burning, gnawing, or aching in the upper abdomen, sometimes with nausea, burping, fullness, or sour fluid reaching the throat. Reflux tends to produce burning behind the breastbone or into the throat, while inflammation of the stomach lining can cause upper abdominal discomfort. Symptoms alone do not identify a single condition.

Pain elsewhere in the abdomen, cramping with diarrhoea, fever, persistent vomiting, or pain after fatty food may point toward a different digestive problem. Record the precise area, onset, duration, meal relationship, bowel changes, and medicines taken; these details help separate stomach irritation from gallbladder, bowel, or infectious causes.

What you can do safely

For mild discomfort without warning signs, choose smaller, plain meals, drink enough fluid, and avoid alcohol and foods that clearly trigger burning. Stay upright after eating. Do not keep taking anti-inflammatory painkillers for unexplained stomach pain, because they can irritate the stomach; a pharmacist can check alternatives and review your other medicines.

If symptoms resemble reflux, a pharmacist may suggest a short course of a suitable non-prescription product after checking your age, pregnancy status, medical history, and prescriptions. Avoid repeatedly masking pain whose cause is unclear. Note whether treatment changes the burning, but arrange assessment when pain returns, shifts location, or develops new associated symptoms.

Signs that need prompt attention

Seek emergency help for sudden severe abdominal pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, collapse, trouble breathing, vomiting blood, black sticky stools, or chest pressure with sweating or pain spreading to the jaw or arm. Urgent assessment is also appropriate when persistent vomiting prevents fluids from staying down.

Contact a clinician soon if pain continues, repeatedly wakes you, worsens, follows a new medicine, or occurs with fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, ongoing diarrhoea, blood in the stool, difficulty swallowing, unintentional weight loss, or a lasting change in bowel habit. The symptom pattern determines which examination or test is appropriate.

Details to discuss at your visit

Explain whether the pain burns, cramps, or feels sharp; point to its exact site; and mention food, posture, bowel movements, or medicines that alter it. Ask what causes fit the full pattern, whether any medication should be paused or changed under supervision, and what follow-up is needed if the initial plan does not help.

Questions people ask

Is every burning stomach pain caused by excess acid?

No. Burning can accompany reflux or stomach irritation, but gallbladder, bowel, medication-related, and infectious problems can produce overlapping discomfort. The site and associated symptoms matter.

Can painkillers make stomach pain worse?

Some anti-inflammatory painkillers can irritate the stomach lining or aggravate an ulcer. Check the active ingredient and ask a pharmacist or clinician about a suitable option rather than continuing them for unexplained pain.

What should I track before an appointment?

Write down where the pain occurs, its character, when it starts, how long it lasts, its relationship to meals, and any vomiting, fever, stool change, swallowing problem, or medicine use.
