Acid reflux and laryngitis

Short answer
Acid laryngitis describes voice-box irritation associated with reflux, often causing hoarseness, throat clearing or cough.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible features
- Hoarseness, throat clearing, cough or a lump sensation
- Voice care
- Hydrate and avoid shouting, whispering and smoke
- Diagnosis
- Ongoing hoarseness may require examination of the vocal cords
What acid laryngitis means
Stomach contents can reach the throat and irritate tissues around the larynx. Some people notice a sour taste or heartburn, while others mainly have voice and throat symptoms. A hoarse voice also occurs with viral infections, voice strain, smoke exposure and other conditions, so reflux is only one possible explanation.
Clues in the symptom pattern
Reflux-related irritation may be worse after meals, on waking, after lying down or following repeated throat clearing. The voice can sound rough, weak or lower than usual, and there may be a sensation of mucus or a lump in the throat. Laryngitis from a common cold more often occurs with a runny nose, fever or a short-lived sore throat.
Symptoms alone may not confirm the cause. Persistent hoarseness needs examination because the vocal cords cannot be assessed from how the voice sounds.
Protecting the throat and voice
Use a comfortable speaking voice and avoid shouting, prolonged talking and whispering, which can strain the voice. Sip water regularly and avoid smoke or vaping exposure. Try swallowing or taking a sip instead of repeatedly clearing the throat.
If symptoms track with reflux, use smaller meals, remain upright after eating and avoid meals close to bedtime. Adjust personal food or drink triggers rather than following an unnecessarily restrictive diet. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether reflux medicine is appropriate and check for interactions.
When your voice needs medical review
Arrange a GP assessment for hoarseness that persists, repeatedly returns, progressively worsens or occurs with pain when speaking or swallowing. Earlier review is sensible if you smoke, have a neck lump, cough up blood, lose weight without trying or develop one-sided ear pain.
Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, or severe symptoms after an allergic reaction. These signs require airway assessment rather than reflux self-care.
Preparing for a consultation
Tell the clinician when the voice changed, what makes it worse, whether you have heartburn or nasal symptoms, and how you use your voice at work. Ask whether the larynx should be examined and when referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist or voice therapist would be appropriate.

Questions people ask
Can reflux affect my voice without heartburn?
Yes. Reflux-related laryngeal irritation can present mainly with hoarseness, cough or throat clearing, although these symptoms have several other possible causes.
Should I whisper while my voice is hoarse?
Whispering can increase strain in some people. Speak gently at a comfortable pitch, reduce unnecessary voice use and keep well hydrated.
