Short answer

Occasional acid heartburn may ease with upright posture, smaller meals, trigger avoidance and a pharmacist-recommended medicine used as directed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical feeling
Burning behind the breastbone, sometimes rising towards the throat
Helpful first move
Remain upright after eating and avoid a known personal trigger

The short answer

Stay upright after eating and loosen clothing that presses on your abdomen. If symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep or require repeated self-treatment, arrange a clinical review rather than continuing to mask them.

What the burning sensation can mean

Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone that can rise towards the throat, sometimes with a sour taste. Acid reflux commonly presents with heartburn when stomach contents travel back into the oesophagus. A hiatus hernia can make reflux easier to occur, but one episode does not identify its cause.

Upper-abdominal burning, nausea or uncomfortable fullness may instead fit indigestion or gastritis. Notice whether symptoms follow particular meals, bending, lying down, smoking, alcohol or a recently started medicine; that pattern can help a clinician choose the next step.

Steps that may bring relief

Choose smaller meals and avoid lying flat soon after eating. Reduce only the foods or drinks that reliably trigger your own symptoms, which may include fatty meals, spicy food, caffeine or alcohol. Keeping a brief meal-and-symptom note is more useful than removing many foods at once.

Antacids neutralise stomach acid, while alginate products form a barrier above stomach contents. Other acid reflux medicines reduce acid production. A pharmacist can check which option fits your symptoms and whether it conflicts with prescriptions, pregnancy, kidney problems or other health conditions. Follow the label and do not exceed the stated dose.

When to seek medical care

Seek emergency help for new, severe or unexplained chest pressure or pain, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, nausea, or discomfort spreading to the arm, jaw, neck or back. Do not assume these symptoms are heartburn.

Prompt assessment is also needed for vomiting blood, vomit resembling coffee grounds, black tarry stools, trouble or pain when swallowing, persistent vomiting, severe constant abdominal pain, or unintentional weight loss. Book a routine appointment when heartburn recurs, worsens or fails to improve with appropriate self-care.

Useful questions for your appointment

Ask whether any current medicine could aggravate reflux, which treatment is suitable alongside your prescriptions, and how long to try it before review. Mention swallowing problems, night waking, regurgitation, cough, bowel changes and every non-prescription remedy you use.

Questions people ask

Can I take an antacid with my regular medicines?

Antacids can alter how some medicines are absorbed. Show a pharmacist your full medicine and supplement list, then follow the advised spacing and product directions.

Why does heartburn get worse when I lie down?

Gravity no longer helps keep stomach contents down, so reflux can reach the oesophagus more easily. Leaving time between eating and lying flat may help.

Does chest burning always come from stomach acid?

No. Chest discomfort has several possible causes, including urgent heart problems. New or concerning pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness or spreading discomfort needs emergency assessment.
