Acids for Uneven Skin Tone: What to Know

Alpha-hydroxy acids such as glycolic or lactic acid loosen surface cells, which can make dullness and shallow discoloration look more even over time. Stronger products are not automatically more effective: irritation can deepen pigmentation, especially in skin that marks easily.

An acid can help when unevenness comes from a buildup of surface cells or marks left after inflammation. Deeper or recurring pigment, including melasma and sun-related patches, may need a broader plan because heat, light, hormones, inflammation, and ultraviolet exposure can keep stimulating pigment production.

Before treating a patch, notice whether it is flat or raised, new or longstanding, and whether its border, colour, or texture is changing. An exfoliating product should not be used to disguise an unexplained changing lesion.

Choose a clearly labelled facial product and begin on a small area. Apply it less often at first, avoid broken or freshly irritated skin, and increase use only if there is no persistent burning, swelling, or peeling. Do not layer several exfoliating acids, scrubs, or strong retinoid products in the same routine unless a clinician has designed that plan.

Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser to support the skin barrier. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day and limit direct sun exposure; otherwise, treated areas may darken again. A dermatologist can distinguish surface discoloration from melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation, or sun spots and match treatment to your skin tone.

Stop the product and arrange medical advice if you develop marked swelling, blistering, crusting, severe pain, or pigment that becomes noticeably darker after irritation. Seek prompt assessment for a spot that is new and rapidly changing, bleeds without a clear injury, does not heal, or develops an irregular border or several colours.

Book a routine dermatology visit when uneven tone persists despite a gentle routine and sun protection, or when you are unsure what caused it. Professional chemical peels require an examination and controlled selection of acid strength because an unsuitable peel can cause burns or prolonged colour change.

Ask what type and depth of pigmentation you have, which active ingredients fit your skin sensitivity, and which products should not be combined. Also ask how to recognise irritation early and whether a chemical peel, skin-brightening treatment, or light-based procedure is suitable for your pigment pattern.
