Acid for Keratosis Pilaris: What to Know

Short answer
Exfoliating acids may soften the keratin plugs of keratosis pilaris, but gentle use and regular moisturising help limit irritation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What acids do
- Loosen compacted surface cells around hair follicles
- Key companion step
- Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser
- Reason to pause
- Burning, cracking, blistering or persistent redness
The short answer
Products containing lactic, glycolic or salicylic acid are commonly used for the rough texture. They manage the surface buildup rather than removing the underlying tendency, so bumps can return after treatment stops.
How acids affect the bumps
Keratosis pilaris develops when keratin collects around hair-follicle openings, often producing small, rough bumps on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks or buttocks. Exfoliating acids loosen compacted surface cells, which can make the area feel smoother and look less blocked over time.
A stronger sting does not mean a product is working better. Burning, persistent redness, cracking or tenderness suggests irritation and can make texture and discoloration more noticeable, especially on sensitive skin.
Use acid with less irritation
Test the product on a small area first. Apply it as directed to intact skin, start less often than the maximum label frequency, and increase only if the skin remains comfortable. Follow with a fragrance-free moisturiser and avoid harsh scrubs, picking and very hot showers.
Do not layer several exfoliating acids or add a topical retinoid on the same area without professional guidance. Pause acid use after shaving or waxing if the skin feels raw, and use sun protection on exposed treated areas because irritation can increase sun sensitivity.
When the skin needs assessment
Stop the product and seek medical advice if you develop marked swelling, blistering, severe burning or a spreading rash. Tender bumps containing pus, warmth, crusting or rapidly increasing redness may point to infection or another follicle condition rather than uncomplicated keratosis pilaris.
Arrange a dermatologist visit when the diagnosis is uncertain, the bumps leave troublesome dark marks, or careful over-the-counter treatment keeps causing irritation. A clinician can distinguish keratosis pilaris from folliculitis, eczema and ingrown hairs and tailor treatment to your skin.
Questions for your dermatologist
Ask which acid and formulation suit your skin sensitivity, whether your current cleanser or retinoid should be separated from it, and what non-acid moisturiser can support the skin barrier. If facial bumps or inflamed follicles are present, ask whether the diagnosis or treatment plan should differ by body area.

Questions people ask
Which acid is used for keratosis pilaris?
Lactic, glycolic and salicylic acid are found in products intended to smooth rough, follicular bumps. The suitable choice depends on formulation, body area, skin sensitivity and any other active products you use.
Can I scrub keratosis pilaris while using an acid?
Forceful scrubbing can damage the skin barrier and worsen redness. Use gentle washing, avoid picking, and let the exfoliating product work without adding abrasive tools or gritty scrubs.
Why did the bumps become redder after applying acid?
The product may be too strong, used too frequently or combined with another irritant. Stop until the skin settles; seek care for severe burning, swelling, blisters or a spreading rash.
