Skinoren azelaic acid: uses and safe application

Skinoren is a brand name, while azelaic acid is the active ingredient. Cream and gel products can differ in strength, texture, approved use and application advice. Read the leaflet supplied with your own pack and follow the prescription or pharmacist's directions rather than copying a routine intended for another version.

In acne care, azelaic acid reduces pore blockage and inflammation and acts against bacteria involved in acne. Some azelaic acid formulations are also used for inflammatory bumps associated with rosacea. This does not mean every patch of facial redness should be self-treated, because eczema, contact irritation and other rashes may look similar.

Clean the treatment area gently and dry it before spreading a thin layer as directed. Keep the medicine away from the eyes, mouth, inside of the nose and other mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with cool water; persistent eye irritation needs medical assessment.

Regular use matters, but applying extra will not speed improvement and may aggravate the skin. A bland moisturiser can support the skin barrier, and daytime sunscreen is helpful when acne marks or uneven pigment are concerns. Tell the prescriber about other topical acne products so they can separate applications or simplify the routine if needed.

Local itching, stinging, dryness or redness may occur, particularly early in treatment. Contact the prescriber or pharmacist if irritation is intense, keeps worsening or prevents continued use; they can advise whether to reduce frequency, pause treatment or choose another formulation. Stop the medicine and get urgent care for swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash. People with asthma should also report any clear worsening of breathing symptoms after application.

Confirm which diagnosis is being treated, which Skinoren formulation you have, how often it belongs in your routine and how long to continue before reassessment. Also ask how to coordinate it with benzoyl peroxide, a topical antibiotic or a retinoid. Discuss allergies, asthma, pregnancy, breastfeeding and treatment near the breast before starting or continuing the medicine.
