Paula's Choice azelaic acid: what to know

Short answer

Paula's Choice azelaic acid is a leave-on skincare product that may help with blemishes, redness and uneven-looking tone, but it can irritate sensitive skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the product is doing

Azelaic acid helps keep pores from becoming clogged and has anti-inflammatory activity. Those actions can make it useful in routines for acne-prone skin and visible redness, while its effect on pigment production may gradually improve marks left after spots. Results are progressive rather than immediate.

A Paula's Choice formula is a cosmetic product, not automatically interchangeable with a prescribed azelaic acid medicine. The complete formula matters: check the current package for other active ingredients, because combining it with retinoids, exfoliating acids or benzoyl peroxide may increase dryness, stinging or peeling.

How to introduce it

Patch-test a small area first. If your skin remains comfortable, apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin at the frequency stated on the product label. Starting less often can make it easier to judge tolerance. Avoid the eyelids, lips, nostrils and broken skin, and wash your hands after application.

Use a simple moisturiser if the area feels dry and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day, especially when treating uneven tone. Add only one new active at a time. If you already use prescription acne or rosacea treatment, ask the prescriber or pharmacist where this product fits in the routine before layering them.

When irritation needs attention

Mild tingling, dryness or temporary redness can occur when starting azelaic acid. Stop using the product and seek prompt medical advice if burning is strong, the skin becomes markedly swollen or blistered, or a rash continues after the product is washed off. Get urgent help for facial swelling, wheezing, breathing difficulty or widespread hives, which can signal a serious allergic reaction.

Useful questions for a clinician

Ask whether your concern looks more like acne, rosacea, irritation or another condition; whether your current retinoid or exfoliant should be used on alternate days; and which changes would mean stopping treatment. Mention pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, breastfeeding, eczema and previous reactions to skincare so the clinician can tailor the routine.

Questions people ask

Can I use Paula's Choice azelaic acid every day?

Follow the frequency on the current product label, but begin more gradually if your skin is sensitive. Reduce use or pause if persistent burning, redness or peeling develops.

Can it be combined with retinol or exfoliating acids?

Some people can combine them, but using several active products together can increase irritation. Introduce them separately or use them on different days, and get personalised advice if one is prescribed.

Does azelaic acid fade marks from spots?

It may gradually improve post-blemish discolouration, although response varies. Daily sun protection helps prevent treated marks from becoming more noticeable.
