AC joint kinesio tape: what to know

Short answer
Kinesiology tape may provide light support and movement feedback around a sore AC joint, but it does not repair a ligament injury or replace a clinical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main purpose
- Light support and movement feedback
- Key limitation
- Tape does not repair an injured ligament
- Stop using it if
- Skin or nerve symptoms develop
What AC joint taping is meant to do
The acromioclavicular, or AC, joint sits at the top of the shoulder where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade. Flexible tape placed over nearby skin can act as a sensory cue, helping some people notice shoulder position and avoid movements that aggravate the area. It may also make everyday activity feel more supported. Tape cannot confirm the cause of pain, hold a separated joint back in place, or heal damaged ligaments.
How to use tape safely
Ask a physiotherapist to assess the shoulder and demonstrate a pattern suited to your symptoms, skin, and activities. Apply tape to clean, dry, intact skin without pulling it tightly across the joint. The tape should feel comfortable and should not cause tingling, numbness, throbbing, or colour change in the arm or hand. Remove it gently if the skin burns, blisters, becomes very itchy, or develops a spreading rash. Do not tape over broken, infected, or markedly irritated skin.
Use taping as one part of a plan that may include temporary activity changes, gradual shoulder exercises, and attention to lifting technique. If pain increases during an exercise or after taping, stop and have the approach checked rather than adding more tension or layers.
When to seek medical care
Arrange an assessment after a fall or direct blow to the shoulder, especially if there is a new bump, marked swelling, bruising, weakness, or difficulty lifting the arm. Seek urgent care if the arm becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, or severely weak. Shoulder pain accompanied by chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the jaw or arm also needs urgent medical attention. Persistent pain, night pain, fever, or worsening redness should be evaluated rather than managed with tape alone.
Questions to ask your clinician
Ask what is most likely irritating the top of your shoulder, whether examination or imaging is appropriate, and which movements you can continue safely. A physiotherapist can also explain where the tape should sit, how much stretch to use, when to remove it, and which strengthening or mobility exercises address the underlying problem.

Questions people ask
Can kinesiology tape fix an AC joint separation?
No. Flexible tape may provide a sense of support, but it cannot restore joint alignment or repair torn ligaments. A traumatic injury with deformity, swelling, or loss of function needs clinical assessment.
How tight should AC joint kinesio tape feel?
It should feel comfortable and should not restrict circulation or create tingling, numbness, throbbing, or skin pain. A physiotherapist can demonstrate suitable placement and tension for your shoulder.
Should I exercise while the shoulder is taped?
Taping may be used during exercises chosen for your condition, but it should not be used to push through sharp or worsening pain. Follow the activity limits and progression provided after assessment.
