Understanding abnormal amniocentesis results

The report does not by itself describe how strongly a baby may be affected. The meaning depends on the exact finding, the test method, ultrasound findings and whether the laboratory describes the result as confirmed, uncertain or limited.

A laboratory may identify an extra or missing chromosome, a change within a chromosome, a specific gene variant or a biochemical marker linked with a condition. Some reports instead show mosaicism, meaning the tested cells do not all have the same chromosome pattern.

Occasionally, a finding has uncertain significance, the cells do not grow well enough for analysis or maternal cells affect the sample. These situations may leave the answer incomplete rather than confirming that the baby has a disorder. A fetal medicine specialist and genetic counsellor can translate the laboratory wording into possible effects and remaining uncertainty.

Arrange a prompt appointment with the clinician who ordered the test. Ask for the full laboratory report and the precise name of the finding. Your team may compare it with a detailed ultrasound, review both parents' medical histories or offer parental blood tests to learn whether a genetic change was inherited.

If the sample or result is unclear, the options may include laboratory review, testing by another method or, in selected circumstances, another diagnostic sample. Take time to discuss what each option can answer, its limitations and how the result could affect pregnancy care before deciding.

The laboratory result itself is not usually a physical emergency. After amniocentesis, however, contact your maternity unit urgently for vaginal bleeding, leaking clear fluid, fever, worsening abdominal pain, regular contractions or a noticeable reduction in your baby's usual movements. These symptoms need assessment regardless of what the genetic report says.

Ask whether the finding is definite or uncertain, what health effects range from possible to expected, and whether ultrasound can add useful information. Clarify whether testing either parent would change the interpretation, when specialist review is available and which pregnancy or newborn care decisions need to be considered now.
