Because only a fraction of the surface is treated in each pass, recovery is generally different from full-field ablation. The device, energy settings, treatment density, body area, and individual skin response determine the depth of injury and expected downtime.

The laser removes tiny vertical zones of tissue and heats tissue around them. Repair begins from the untreated skin between those zones, while remodelling below the surface can gradually alter texture. Fractional treatment may be considered for acne scars, fine lines, roughness, and mottled sun damage, but it does not erase every mark or stop future ageing.

CO2 and erbium-based systems can both deliver ablative fractional treatment, with different patterns of water absorption and heat spread. A clinician chooses settings according to the target, skin tone, location, and acceptable recovery. Darkening or lightening of the skin, prolonged redness, infection, and scarring are possible complications.

Tell the clinician about isotretinoin or other medicines, active rashes, cold sores, recent sun exposure, previous pigment changes, and raised scars. Ask what must be paused and when; do not stop prescribed treatment on your own. Treatment should wait if the intended area has an active infection or significant irritation.

Use only the cleansing, moisturising, and dressing products recommended for early healing. Keep hands away from flaking skin, avoid swimming and heavy sweating until permitted, and limit direct sun exposure. Introduce makeup, retinoids, exfoliating acids, and fragranced products only after the barrier has recovered and the clinic approves them.

Call the clinic promptly for pain that intensifies, redness that continues to spread, yellow or green discharge, a bad smell, fever, clustered blisters, or swelling that is becoming more pronounced. These findings may need examination for infection, a cold-sore outbreak, or another complication.

Urgent assessment is appropriate for eye pain or altered vision after treatment close to the eye. Breathing difficulty, collapse, or swelling of the tongue or throat requires emergency help. Do not cover a concerning reaction with strong active skincare before receiving clinical advice.

Request written aftercare, a description of normal day-to-day changes, and a direct route for reporting unexpected symptoms.
