Abdominal pain in the left flank

The left flank lies between the lower ribs and the hip, toward the side and back. Pain there may arise from a kidney or ureter, the colon, the abdominal wall, lower ribs, or nerves. Pain that changes with twisting, lifting, coughing, or pressing the area can point toward the body wall, but that feature is not conclusive.

Wave-like pain travelling toward the groin may occur when a urinary stone irritates or blocks a ureter. Burning urine, urgency, fever, bowel changes, bloating, a rash, or a recent injury each changes the clinical picture. The exact location, onset, movement, and associated symptoms are more informative together than any single clue.

For mild pain without warning signs, avoid strenuous activity, keep to normal fluids and meals as tolerated, and observe whether movement, urination, or bowel movements alter the discomfort. Record when it started and any fever, nausea, stool changes, urinary symptoms, skin changes, or menstrual and pregnancy details that apply.

Book a clinical review when pain persists, returns, interrupts normal activity, or has no clear explanation. Examination may include the abdomen, back, ribs, and skin. Depending on the findings, a clinician may request urine or blood tests or arrange imaging rather than relying on location alone.

Get urgent help if left-flank pain is sudden or severe, follows a significant injury, or occurs with fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, a rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, or heavy bleeding in urine or stool. These features can signal a problem that cannot safely wait for a routine visit.

Fever or chills with flank pain and urinary symptoms also needs prompt evaluation because a kidney infection may be present. Seek timely care if you cannot pass urine, cannot keep fluids down, are pregnant, have one functioning kidney, or notice a painful blistering rash spreading around one side of the torso.
