Short answer

Abdominal pain with fever can signal infection or inflammation and deserves prompt assessment if it is severe, persistent, or worsening.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Useful detail
Record the pain location, temperature, vomiting, stool changes, and urinary symptoms.
Avoid
Do not start leftover antibiotics or laxatives without clinical guidance.
Urgent signs
Severe worsening pain, fainting, bleeding, confusion, or inability to drink need urgent care.

The short answer

The pattern matters: note where the pain began, whether it moves, your measured temperature, and symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, urinary discomfort, or loss of appetite.

What this combination may mean

Digestive infections such as gastroenteritis or food poisoning can present with abdominal cramps, fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Inflammation involving the bowel, gallbladder, urinary tract, or another abdominal organ may also cause pain with fever. Location alone cannot confirm the cause, but focused pain that becomes steadily worse is more concerning than mild discomfort that settles.

A clinician may examine the abdomen and ask about bowel movements, urine, recent meals, travel, medicines, pregnancy possibility, and previous surgery. Testing depends on that assessment rather than on fever alone.

What to do now

Rest, sip fluids regularly, and choose light food only if you feel able to eat. Keep a record of temperature and symptom changes. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics or laxatives, because they may be unsuitable for the cause. Check with a pharmacist or clinician before using pain relief if you are pregnant, have kidney or liver problems, take blood-thinning medicine, or are unsure what is safe for you.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent care now for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a hard or very tender abdomen, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, blood in vomit or stool, black stool, repeated vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for pain with pregnancy, marked weakness, very little urine, or a new widespread rash.

Arrange prompt clinical advice if fever and pain persist, recur, or are accompanied by painful urination, ongoing diarrhoea, jaundice, or unexplained weight loss. Babies, older adults, and people with reduced immunity can become unwell quickly, so use a lower threshold for assessment.

Questions for your clinician

Ask which causes fit the pain location and associated symptoms, whether an examination or test is needed, how to maintain hydration, which medicines are suitable, and what specific change should trigger urgent reassessment.

Questions people ask

Can a stomach infection cause abdominal pain and fever?

Yes. Gastroenteritis and food poisoning can present with cramping, fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea, but other infections and inflammatory problems can produce a similar combination.

Should I eat when I have abdominal pain and fever?

Fluids take priority. If you can eat without worsening nausea or pain, try small amounts of plain food and stop if symptoms intensify.

When is dehydration a concern?

Very little urine, a dry mouth, dizziness, unusual drowsiness, or being unable to keep fluids down should prompt medical assessment.
