Abdominal Braces for Diastasis Recti

Short answer
An abdominal brace may provide temporary support and comfort, but it does not repair diastasis recti by itself.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main role
- Temporary external support during movement
- Not a replacement for
- Progressive abdominal rehabilitation
- Fit check
- Full breathing and comfortable movement remain possible
Can a brace help?
A well-fitted brace can make some daily movements feel steadier while the abdominal wall is recovering. It should complement gradual rehabilitation, breathing practice and movement changes rather than replace active muscle retraining.
What the support actually does
Diastasis recti is widening and thinning of the connective tissue between the two sides of the rectus abdominis muscles. A brace applies external support around the trunk, which may improve comfort and body awareness during standing, walking, coughing or lifting.
The brace does not stitch, fuse or permanently draw the muscles together. Wearing it very tightly can restrict comfortable breathing, increase downward pressure or irritate the skin. Fit matters more than firmness.
How to use a brace sensibly
Choose a breathable support that sits flat without rolling or digging in. You should be able to take a full breath, sit comfortably and move without numbness, tingling or increased pelvic pressure. Remove it if pain, breathlessness, skin changes or bulging becomes worse.
Use the brace for tasks where support helps, then spend some time moving without it as tolerated. Pair it with controlled exhalation during effort, avoidance of breath-holding, and exercises selected for your current strength. A physiotherapist can check how your abdomen responds during movement.
When medical assessment is needed
Arrange a clinical assessment if the gap, doming, weakness or pain is limiting normal activity, or if progress has stalled despite careful exercise. Seek urgent care for sudden severe abdominal pain, vomiting, a tender bulge that does not settle, fainting, or inability to pass stool or gas. These features need assessment for problems other than uncomplicated diastasis recti.
Useful questions for your clinician
Ask whether your bulging is consistent with diastasis recti or could be a hernia, whether the brace fits without creating pelvic pressure, and which lifting or exercise patterns should be modified. You can also ask how improvement will be judged through function, control and symptoms rather than the gap alone.

Questions people ask
What should you know about abdominal brace for diastasis recti?
A brace may improve comfort and confidence for selected activities, but recovery also depends on coordinated breathing, load management and progressive strengthening.
Should I wear an abdominal brace all day?
Continuous wear is not necessary for everyone. Use it when it clearly helps, take it off if it causes pressure or irritation, and follow advice tailored to your symptoms and recovery.
How tight should the brace feel?
It should feel supportive rather than restrictive. You should still breathe deeply, sit, bend and walk without pain, tingling or increased pressure in the pelvis.
