Between flares, strength and aerobic activity can support function. Occupational or physiotherapy advice may help with pacing, hand exercises, footwear, splints and ways to protect joints at work or home.

Seek urgent care for a single very hot, swollen joint with fever or marked illness because infection must be excluded. New chest pain, significant breathlessness, coughing blood, sudden weakness or a painful red eye with vision change also require prompt assessment.

Contact your treatment team if a medicine causes a spreading rash, mouth ulcers, persistent vomiting, unusual bruising or signs of infection. Before surgery, vaccination or starting another prescription, check whether rheumatoid medicines need special timing rather than changing them yourself.
