Dizziness: patterns, next steps and warning signs

Short answer
Dizziness describes several sensations, and its timing, triggers and accompanying symptoms help guide the medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

A symptom with several meanings
You may feel that you or the room is spinning, that you might faint, or that you are unsteady. These experiences point clinicians towards different possibilities, so describing the sensation precisely is more useful than the word dizziness alone.
Clues within the symptom pattern
Brief spinning brought on by rolling in bed or looking up can occur when the inner-ear balance system is disturbed. Feeling faint after standing may relate to a blood-pressure drop, dehydration or medicine effects. Anaemia, low blood glucose, anxiety and an irregular heart rhythm can also present with dizziness.
The assessment may include blood pressure while lying and standing, pulse and heart checks, an ear and neurological examination, and selected blood tests. The clinician will also review new medicines, recent illness, fluid intake, bleeding, pregnancy possibility and any hearing changes.
Staying safe while dizzy
Sit or lie down as soon as symptoms start, then rise slowly once they pass. Drink fluids if dehydration is plausible and you have not been told to restrict them. Avoid driving, ladders, swimming alone and operating machinery until episodes are controlled and the cause is clearer.
Record what the sensation feels like, when it begins, how long it lasts, which movements trigger it and what else happens at the same time. Do not stop prescribed medicine abruptly; bring a complete medicine list to the appointment so doses and interactions can be reviewed.
Warning signs needing fast action
Seek emergency help for dizziness with facial droop, one-sided weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, sudden severe headache, fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, a new inability to walk, persistent vomiting or a rapid or irregular heartbeat with collapse.
Arrange timely clinical review for repeated episodes, new hearing loss, symptoms after a head injury, dizziness that began after a medicine change, or episodes that interfere with ordinary activities. Ongoing black stools, heavy bleeding or poor fluid intake also warrant assessment.
Details to clarify with a clinician
Ask which features support an inner-ear, circulation, heart or metabolic cause; whether your medicines could contribute; what tests would change management; and which activities to avoid. If positional vertigo is suspected, ask whether a repositioning manoeuvre is appropriate.

Questions people ask
Is all dizziness vertigo?
No. Vertigo is a spinning or movement sensation. Dizziness can instead feel like faintness, floating or poor balance, and those distinctions influence the assessment.
Should I stop a medicine that seems to cause dizziness?
Do not stop prescribed treatment suddenly unless a clinician has told you to. Seek advice about the timing and dose, and get urgent help if the reaction includes collapse or breathing difficulty.
