When an early scan is not definitive, waiting for a repeat scan can prevent a conclusion based on uncertain timing. The clinician will explain what was measured, what was or was not visible and why another assessment may be necessary. A home pregnancy test cannot confirm the diagnosis because pregnancy hormone may remain detectable.

If pregnancy loss is confirmed, options may include waiting for tissue to pass naturally, using medicine to help the uterus empty, or a procedure to remove pregnancy tissue. The suitable choices depend on bleeding, infection risk, medical history, ultrasound findings, local availability and your preference. Your clinician should explain what to expect, pain relief, follow-up and whom to contact.

Give yourself time to absorb the information and bring a support person if you wish. Ask about work, travel, emotional support and when future pregnancy planning would be medically appropriate for you. This loss is not caused by routine movement, sex or ordinary day-to-day activity.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, severe or escalating abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge or feeling acutely unwell. One-sided pain, collapse or profound weakness requires immediate assessment because early-pregnancy emergencies can present with these symptoms. Follow the emergency instructions given by your local maternity service.

Ask whether the ultrasound findings are definitive, whether repeat imaging is needed and what each management option involves. Clarify expected bleeding and pain, how completion will be checked, whether your blood group affects treatment, and how to access urgent or emotional support after leaving the clinic.
