Short answer

Itchy skin at eight months pregnant may come from stretching or dryness, but severe or unexplained itching needs maternity assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Urgent pattern
Severe itching, nighttime worsening, or itchy palms and soles
Gentle care
Lukewarm water, unperfumed moisturiser, and loose clothing
Useful details
Location, rash appearance, timing, exposures, and fetal movement

The short answer

Contact your maternity team urgently if itching is intense, worse at night, or affects the palms or soles, especially when there is no obvious rash. A pregnancy-related liver condition can present this way and requires blood tests rather than a skin-only diagnosis.

What the pattern may mean

Dryness and stretching can make the abdomen, breasts, or thighs itchy. Atopic dermatitis commonly presents with itchy, inflamed skin; contact dermatitis can present with itching and redness where an irritant or allergen touched the skin; and hives present as raised, transient welts. These patterns do not establish a diagnosis without examination.

Note whether a rash appeared before scratching, where the itch began, whether anyone at home is also itchy, and which soaps, creams, fabrics, or medicines were recently introduced. This helps separate surface irritation from causes that may have little visible rash.

Comfort measures while arranging advice

Use cool or lukewarm showers, apply an unperfumed moisturiser, wear loose breathable clothing, and pat rather than scratch. Keep fingernails short and avoid fragranced soaps or newly introduced skin products until the trigger is clearer.

Check any medicated cream, antihistamine, herbal preparation, or essential oil with a maternity clinician or pharmacist who knows you are pregnant. Treatment depends on the cause, the body area involved, and the condition of the skin.

When to seek urgent care

Call your maternity unit promptly for severe generalised itching, itching on the palms or soles, symptoms that disturb sleep, dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the eyes or skin. Report reduced or changed fetal movement immediately according to your maternity unit's instructions.

Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, a rapidly spreading blistering rash, fever with a painful rash, or skin that is hot, swollen, and draining fluid.

What to ask your maternity clinician

Ask whether liver function and bile acid tests are needed, which moisturisers or medicines are suitable in pregnancy, and what change should trigger reassessment. If testing is initially normal but itching continues, ask when repeat assessment may be appropriate.

Questions people ask

Can pregnancy itching occur without a rash?

Yes. Skin stretching or dryness may have few visible signs, and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy can cause itching without a primary rash. Late-pregnancy itch therefore deserves clinical attention.

Is moisturiser safe to use?

A plain, unperfumed moisturiser is a reasonable comfort measure for many people. Check medicated or fragranced products with a maternity clinician or pharmacist.

Can scratching create a rash?

Repeated scratching can leave red lines, broken skin, crusts, and thickened areas. Tell the clinician whether visible changes began before or after the scratching.
