Understanding a 6 mm lung nodule

This small spot may represent healed infection, inflammation, scar tissue or another process. A CT report supplies clues, but the scan is interpreted together with previous imaging and factors such as smoking exposure, age, immune health and a history of cancer.

Radiologists assess density, border, location and whether there are other nodules or nearby lung changes. A partly hazy nodule is followed differently from some solid nodules because its appearance and expected behaviour differ.

An unchanged finding on a suitable older CT provides different information from a newly seen or enlarging one. Even a small apparent difference can reflect breathing or scan technique, so images need professional side-by-side review rather than comparison of report wording alone.

Confirm who is responsible for reviewing the result and arranging any repeat CT. Ask the clinic to obtain earlier chest scans from other facilities. Put the planned scan and result appointment in your calendar, and contact the clinic if an expected booking does not arrive.

A biopsy is not decided by measurement alone and can be technically difficult for a small target. The clinician may favor imaging follow-up unless growth, suspicious features or your medical history changes the balance. Smoking cessation support remains worthwhile for overall lung health.

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop coughing up blood, a persistent new cough, unexplained weight loss, continuing fever, chest pain or increasing shortness of breath. Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, substantial bleeding, blue or grey lips, confusion or collapse. These symptoms require assessment based on their seriousness, not on the nodule's size.

You can ask whether the nodule is new, what its density and border look like, whether older imaging changes the interpretation, what follow-up interval fits your circumstances, and what finding would lead to specialist referral or tissue sampling.
